Age at Death: 78 years

Robert Winter January 27, 2024

Carmichael, California - Bob was born shortly after V-E Day to William "Erwin" and Adelene Winter in Sacramento, CA. He grew up in the Curtis Park neighborhood and graduated in McClatchy High's Class of 1963. He passed away at the age of 78 in Carmichael, CA on January 27th, 2024.

Graduating from the UC Davis College of Engineering in the late sixties, Bob devoted his life to the public sector, helping to make America more self-sustaining and secure. That work started at Mare Island Naval Shipyard with the monitoring of power systems on nuclear submarines and ultimately saw him traveling throughout the country as part of an inspection team for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He retired in 2016 and returned to the Sacramento area thereafter.

Bob was an avid cyclist, a lifelong learner, appreciated a wide range of music, and was always up for a calm and respectful discussion of historical or current events. His quiet and placid manner never concealed the warmth of his heart. He will be greatly missed.

Bob was preceded in death by both his parents and his sister, Nancy Kreutzer. He is survived by his sister's widower Richard Kreutzer, his niece Karin, his nephew Douglas, and numerous cousins. Details of the service will be announced at a later date. The family asks that remembrances be made in Bob's name to the UC Davis College of Engineering or BikeDavis.

I knew Bob from kindergarten.  He was always a very quiet person.  He loved what he studied and was a very studious person.  Rest in peace Bob!

I was realy sadden to learn that Bob has passed away as he was a close friend during our years at McClatchy. From our sophomore to our senior year Roger Peterson, Bob and I always attended all the football games together and after the game cruised K Street or bought sodas at the A&K rootbeer stand on Freeport blvd. When we graduarted Bob did not have a date for the senior prom so Roger and I went to his house and kidnapped him, forcing him to attend our high school fairwell event. We told him that we were not going to let him be alone on graduation night. While he initially reisted our attempts to get him to the dance, I always thought he was happy that we insisted that he spend his last high school days with his friends.

Bob's mother was also a wonderful woman and when we were at Bob's house she always talked to us and made sure were were adjusting well to high school life. Besides my mother and Roger's mother she was like a third  parent always checking up on us and making sure we were OK. She was also  a warm friendly women with a great sense of humor.

After we graduarted from high school Roger, Bob, Mike Goldstein, Steve Lindfelt and I also  camped out in Yosemites for several days. I remember Bob  brought along enough clothes for a month or two on our campout.  In light of all the suitcases Bob was carrying, all of us, including his mother, got a big laugh over how prepared Bob was  for our post high school adventure.

Unfortunately, I lost touch with Bob after graduation. But I have many fond memories of Bob and really enjoyed all the time we spent together in high school. Howevert I must admit that it is really hard to accopt the fact that another special friend from high school is no longer with us. At times the news from the McClatchy websight is overwhelming.

I knew Bob from elementary school through high school. Not the close friendship Bill Kelso had with him but he was a friend nevertheless through the school years. I have a couple of stories too, but they can't top Kelso's one about camping. Rather than sharing them I'll let them stay within my memories. Sorry to see another classmate pass on.

Bob was a sweet boy. He and I dated several times and he always had a shy smile on his face. We'd catch up at the high school reunions and that smile was always there. A gentle soul has left us.
